Swedish Apple Pie

One of the best traditions of Thanksgiving is Pie.  We love the traditional pumpkin, but it’s also fun to have an assortment so you can try a little piece of each.  If you love homemade pie, but jus don’t like to mess with making the crust – you can scratch that off your list with this Swedish Apple Pie.  No crust worries here, this pie makes its own  unique cookie crust on top and no bottom crust.

Of course a scoop of ice cream (or whipped cream) is always a good addition!  What is your favorite Thanksgiving Pie – or pies because who can choose just one?

Swedish Apple Pie

Ingredients

5-6 baking apples, peeled cored and sliced in eighths*
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon (divided use)
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup sugar (divided use)
1/8 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter, melted
1 egg, beaten
1 cup flour
1/3 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350.  Lightly butter the bottom of a 9 inch deep-dish pie plate.

Toss apple slices with lemon juice.  Mix 2 teaspoons of the cinnamon and the nutmeg with 2 tablespoons of the sugar.  Sprinkle over the apple slices and toss to coat.  Place apples in pie plate.  Combine the remaining sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon with the salt, butter, and egg.   Add flour and mix thoroughly.  Stir in nuts (optional).  Spoon batter evenly over apple slices.  Bake for 45-55 minutes. Let pie cool slightly before serving, or serve at room temperature.

*Note:  A combination of tart Granny Smith apples and sweeter but softer baking apples like Golden Delicious or Macintosh makes a great combination, or use all Granny Smith.

  1. My favorite is pecan. BTW, I’ve never tried to make one but if I had a good recipe . . .

  2. Okay this is my kind of pie. I never have been able to make a crust 🙂 I love pumpkin pie but also have pecan and apple at thanksgiving.

  3. I’m not a pumpkin person so I go for anything chocolate

  4. I’ve never met a pie I didn’t like!

  5. I am from Sweden. And can’t say this is traditionally swedish. We usually don’t use lemon juice..? Or eggs.

    Filling
    5 apples (firm, tart)
    1 cup sugar
    1 tablespoon cinnamon

    piedough
    1 1/2 cups flour
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    100g butter or margarine

  6. Nezzie – thanks so much for the authentic recipe! (so much for my sources…). I can’t wait to try yours! 🙂

  7. This recipe was a disaster. I have made it twice now and the batter doesn’t turn out as it looks in the picture. It is more like a sauce that the apples sit in and no crust forms on the top. I have been careful both times to read and follow the directions but neither time has it worked out. I will try a different recipe on this blog next time.

  8. Angella – So sorry it didn’t work for you 🙁 I’m not sure why…
